I can't give the exact years offhand, but there is much information on the 'net. I suppose you know that OMC, parent company of both Johnson and Evinrude, went bankrupt. BRP then bought what was left.
After many years of identical J/E motors, in the latter years they started separating the two lines. Environmental issues had a lot to do with it, along with several setbacks in the marine industry in general. Evinrude focused on the FICHT, a collossal failure, and Johnson was importing Suzuki motors.
It seems that present day Evinrudes are fine, and the Johnson line was discontinued to focus on the new Evinrudes. Just business good sense, I guess. Hey, at least they saved the business.
