They stopped making them because it didn't really make sense to make two identical products lines. Although they did do a few different things with the two brands the last few years before they were discontinued. If you really want a Johnson, get the Evinrude and buy some Johnson stickers for it. It will be no different than before.

Re: When did Brp stop making johnys?

I can't give the exact years offhand, but there is much information on the 'net. I suppose you know that OMC, parent company of both Johnson and Evinrude, went bankrupt. BRP then bought what was left.

After many years of identical J/E motors, in the latter years they started separating the two lines. Environmental issues had a lot to do with it, along with several setbacks in the marine industry in general. Evinrude focused on the FICHT, a collossal failure, and Johnson was importing Suzuki motors.

It seems that present day Evinrudes are fine, and the Johnson line was discontinued to focus on the new Evinrudes. Just business good sense, I guess. Hey, at least they saved the business.

While the 300 may be a tad on the odd side the little 15 would make a neat package. Especially since it's the same weight as an 8 hp 4 stroke.

You can get an Evinrude as small as 15hp - or a 25, 30, 40,etc.

see--

http://www.evinrude.com/en-US/Engines

I can't figure out what I'm missing - the only 15 I see on that site is a 15 hp HO AT 177 LBS??? For a kicker? Seriously? I must be missing the simpler/lighter version somewhere because this outweighs the 15 hp 4 strokes by almost 50 lbs!

I love me my 70 lb Merc 9.8!

Luckily I have two :) a '74 Merc 9.8 and recently acquired a nice running quite modern '83 (give or take) Evi 15.

I stopped by the local merc dealer the other day and I thought I remembered he said their 9.9 4 stroke was around 90? 90 I can handle, but not much more w/o getting tired of it real fast.

Re: When did Brp stop making johnys?

I was just about to post the same old question in a new thread. Better to revive this older one....

Can anyone summarize the Johnson/Suzuki re-badging....

What year did it start?

What model engines were affected year-by-year after that?

Somewhere there must be a concise summary.

Thanks, Chuck

Re: When did Brp stop making johnys?

This topic peaked my interest so I browsed the iboats archives and found MANY discussions on this very topic. I would do a search. I found discussions as far back as 2002. Very interesting to go back and reread those threads. Wow, we all really thought Johnson was going to make 4 strokes! :D

Johnson and Evinrude outboards have not been identical motors since 1998.

The defunct OMC used Evinrude for the high tech and a few 4 stroke larger motors that were Suzukis, plus OMC designed and produced 4 strokes in the small motors.

When Bombardier started production in 2002, Johnson offered their own designed 2-strokes through 175hp and the 4-stroke using rebadged Suzukis. They sold various hp models over the years thru 2007.

Stricter EPA and California emission regulations doomed the fuel injected and carbureted 2 stroke outboards.
