It seems to me that the lower units each have one 5 inch extension too many.
Almost like it is a 15 inch transom with long shaft units on it,but there might be an optical mistake since the picture was taken from above.

Why would you run the 40hp and a 20hp at the same time:confused:

That's the million dollar question. My grandpa loaned a 9.9 to a guy for trolling who proceded to use it in conjunction with his 25 and promptly fried the 9.9. It couldn't do anything but over rev. I wonder how much this guy has actually run the two together. It's been on craigslist for a few months now. Wonder why.

Maybe he does not run them at the same time, maybe one is a spare in case the other craps out, they look pretty old.

He has dual throttles at the helm, and they are tied together for steering, you can see the steering cables and "tie-rod" here.....

I do not know how you would set the prop pitches for that setup, trying to keep it all even on thrust. Seems it would have been way smarter to sell those and get one 55-65hp engine!

In the ad he says, "Top speed with both engines cranking is about 25 mph." I'm no expert but I don't see how that 20 could still be running if he's run them together much.

I think it was too fast to handle with just the 40 on it. He installed the 20 so the extra drag from the lower in the water would slow it down enough to be controllable. Judging from the wake in the picture with the tube, he's only running on the 40. Probbaly can't tell any difference in speed if the 20 is running or not!

Re: What's wrong with this setup?

Correct WOT range on both of those motors is probably 4500 to 5500 rpm. As long as the prop pitch is the same on both props, the motors are going to run at the same rpm with similar throttle input. Where the problem usually comes into play with motors of significantly different hp ratings is in the props, because smaller motors sometimes have props of much less pitch. That causes the stronger and much larger motor to "drag" the smaller motor along, which in turn causes the low pitch prop to wind it up beyond its recommeded rpm limit.

The real problem here is in asymmetric thrust, because the small diameter prop on the 20hp, which will also have a shorter blade "chord," will provide significantly less thrust. This can be overcome by mounting the smaller motor further away from centerline and/or toeing the motors differently, through adjustments in the steering system.

I do agree that the arrangement would work better with short shaft motors - look at how far below the transom the cavitation plates are. The boat would most likely go faster with short shaft motors.

I think the boat hasn't sold simply because most people would find the setup to be a little "weird."
