Whats wrong with my control?

I did some searching but would like some for info..

I have a 97 4.3 v6 mercruiser with a alpha one outdrive. So my problem is when i shift into forward i push the control about half way down before it grabs and when it does it jerks the whole boat. it does this about 2 out 3 times i go forward sometimes its fine but most of the time it shifts hard. Going into reverse is fine. Any ideas on where i could start?

Likely cause is the shift linkage isn't adjusted properly. If you don't have the manual, you can find one on the net.
