What's wrong with Microsoft???

Two different times on two different Win 7 laptops, the volume Icon has disappeared from the task bar. Even though these computers are about 2 years apart, they have both had all the Microsoft updates.

Fortunately, with a Google of the subject, I found a YouTube that took you thru the REGEDIT directory and the Task Manager to remedy and restore the icon. The YouTube video made it easy. If you had to follow written instructions it would have been a lot more difficult.

Point is, where is their head. What are their priorities that they cannot even make a volume icon stay put???

They stopped caring about the end user. Their main priority is profit. Like the windows 8 crap that may work on a phone but is garbage on a desk top or lap top.

Their hackers, I mean coders, may be a little distracted building undetectable backdoors they can sell later

I am using Windows 8 on my laptop and have it set up just the same as my windows 7 machine, I am not having any problems. I installed a little app to put the start button back where it belongs and have been humming along every since. But I do agree, as with every other big business, Microsoft's main priority is profit, and they are far more interested in their corporate customers than their little guy customers.

Watch the bashing, although the thread title made me laugh out loud. I think we have all been asking that question for 15 years

BTW, any company's main priority has to be profit. Only thing that keeps the doors open ;)

Profit is good, profit is moral, profit is the grease that makes the world go around. Otherwise we would still be living in caves or in the slums of London (days of yore) or Calcutta. However, the quest for profit does not excuse a provider from supplying the simplest fundamentals!!

I have had my speaker icon disappear on several versions of windows over the years, I simply go to the sound properties in the control panel, uncheck the box that says show the icon, then recheck and it restores my speaker icon so I can control sound, this has been happening at least since I had Windows 98

Me too, but I can find it in the "Notification Area" and drag it back to the Systray.

When they stop supporting XP next year, how much of the world will be seriously thinking of learning to use Linux?

I don't think many, I can't honestly see many corporate groups going to linux and really that is where Microsoft focuses these days, they know the majority of average computer users will continue to migrate to the next OS as they support drops. Also there is really now way to know, what is going to happen when the Win 8 update comes out in the next couple of months and the new windows blue is introduced, those could be real game changers.

No such thing that I could find under Sound in the Win 7 control panel. To restore the icon I had to go a delete files in the registry, then go to Task Manager and delete Explorer.exe. No dragging and dropping icons to the desktop.

I've had Ubuntu on this laptop for awhile and so far the worst thing was a small learning curve. Just had to get used to different icons and storage methods.

That's what I'm waiting for, is to see what blue will do........... Until then, XP is working just fine...

Re: What's wrong with Microsoft???

I have a strong feeling, that the update for 8 is going to include the start button, as well as being more geared to a laptop or desktop without touch screens, I believe they pushed and rolled this out way to soon and really that is the only complaint I have had, once I installed an app to get me back to the start button, and I changed it to have a regular desktop without the jump out windows, I don't see a whole lot of difference over my last windows 7 machine.

I do still have a desktop running windows 7 ultimate in 64 bit(media HD recorder) and a desktop running XP pro(weather station) as well as a laptop running XP pro, my wife runs windows 7 home premium 64 bit and my main laptop runs Windows 8 64 bit.

I am getting ready to set up a Windows Server 2007 and I already have a Linux server running for certain things. My house is wired to the hilt!

The update should have the start button back where we are all used to it being.....according to my rep. I have a Windows 8 laptop, and I don't really have any issues with it. If you run it in desktop mode, aside from the start button there are very few differences. I sort of like the tiles set up....after some customizing I actually prefer it. My wife on the other hand hates it.

I can't get used to it. But I had to go back to Windows 7 anyway ... my CAD software won't run with 8. Not sure if they're gonna' skip 8 altogether and wait for the next iteration or what.

The next 5 years is gonna' be interesting for operating systems. Apple (my preferred platform) is even having some design direction troubles post Steve Jobs.

I read an advance press release on the update for window 8, which they are going to call windows 8.1 and it stated, no start button, but there will be a windows icon in the lower left corner, who knows what that is going to be about? In addition you will be able to easily configure to run in desktop mode without the tiles.

I'm guessing 8.1 has nothing to do with Blue? Anymore info on Blue?

Microsoft hasn't been doing much right lately... from Windows 8, to the fumbled Xbox One release, to Adam Orth.

It's too bad because I never bought into the view of Microsoft being this "evil corporation" like a lot of people. I liked Windows 7 and the Xbox 360. Owned them both. The direction they're going is really screwed up.
