Whats up with my motor?

I just got this motor and it runs pretty well all in all. I noticed that sometimes when i power it up that it will try to die out and i'll rev it down and it's fine. It has stopped a couple times and i let it sit and it fired up. I haven't changed the plugs yet that could be it. But i've notcied fuel inside the engine but couldn't find where it's coming from. I don't know nothing about motors. We wanna go down stream with it but i don't wanna choke out 5 miles up. Is this a big prob. or is there something i can do to make it run better. What kind of general maintnece can i do to make it run good. Thanks! it's a 35 hp 85 merc

You might want to take that one to a machanic and have it looked at. It sounds like it could use a carb rebuild but might be something else. But if you know nothing about motors and you plan to use it in the river with a current and don't want to have to beach it and walk back, a good marine machanic is the answer.
