Howdy,

Year model is useless. Serial number is far more helpful.

Looks like some sort of check valve in the T-stat housing.

EDIT: Well, I looked a little closer at a parts breakout. It's called a "poppet valve".

If you want to get to the t-stat, you have to pull all the hoses and remove the entire housing.,

You have a "new" boat with a warranty. Why are you pulling the cap off that thing?

If you are having over heat problems, I would say you have a failed impeller. It takes less than a min of dry running to destroy one. If you injested a "slug" of sand, or caught a plastic bag etc, that would do it also.

Well. Yeah! The Merc REP gets to deny a warranty claim, and the dealer gets to charge for an otherwise covered repair.

Knowing how the thing works brings more comfort than the warranty. Warranty isn't going to get me going again when I break down

My "comfort" is using a towing company for $169 a year as I learn better how things work. Of course even if I did become proficient I would still subscribe to a towing service for everyone's sake........

HT32BSX115 found a parts diagram to identify the part so I have to assume you do not have a similar document to refer to or service manual?

I ask that because if you take stuff apart that maybe has a gasket/o-ring/special lube that was in place, are you just re-installing these parts back together without replacing with a new gasket/o-ring/lube or what the ramifications are of not doing so?

Seems like what you are trying to accomplish is good but without having a parts break-out or installation manual with torque specs or special procedures/notes you may introduce a problem.

Re: Whats this thing

That is a water distribution valve. That spring is to keep hot water from back flowing to something that needs cold water. Now leave it alone and don't take things apart that aren't broke unless you bought your boat for training instead of boating. It's not only bad for your warranty but it could be potentially dangerous to you and your passengers if you don't put things back together correctly that were working correctly before you started.

I thought it was the thermostat. I was going to put pink stuff down there after I took the boat out.

If your going to put pink stuff in, you can pull the top two hoses and poor in there until they fill up (manifold hoses). Then the one large hose (below starboard size) and fill it until it pours out the other side (Block) - (total 3 to 4 gallons)

Here's a link that I followed - however your motor is newer than mine.

Your owners manual, Mercruiser and instructions right here on iBoats outline winterization procedures.

All new (open-cooled) Mercruiser engines have simple instructions on how to drain the raw water.

And here's a good video on winterization that doesn't require disassembling the t-stat housing.

Remember, you MUST drain the block completely before you run the engine with any AF mix.
