New to boats and my first time posting. I have the mercury oil drain system on my 5.7. Not sure what shower curtain loop looking thing is for?

Welcome aboard.

No pic if you meant to add one, but from your description I think you are talking about the oil drain hose holding fixture.

The clip runs through a hole on the plug in the end of the drain line and clips onto an eye on the top of the engine to keep it upright when not in use as a drain.

Welcome.

Do you by chance have a pic of this shower curtain loop thing that you could post?

Someone will be by before long who probably knows exactly what you're talking about by that description alone but it's probably a newer boat than what I'm used to messing with.

Although, now that I think about it, a buddy had a 4.3 mercruiser that had the drain hose for the oil pan & it had a piece like your describing that the hose end hooked into so it didn't just flop around.
I always thought it was just his redneck ingenuity at work & was something that he "came up with"

But, maybe not???

Good luck
Jim.

-Edit- See, I told you someone would be on here before long & these guys posted before I could finish typing even. Lol.

in my boat, the end of the hose was attached to the garboard plug so I could fish it out and it also kept me from loosing the plug.

All that does is force you to haul the boat to change the oil. The typical shower curtain loop just holds the end of the oil drain hose in a convenient location. You can hook a pump to it or use the dipstick tubes threaded fitting and a pump.
