So, I may have shot myself in the foot again. I have an '85 Tara with a 470/Alpha 1. I need to replace the outdrive, and I found a great deal from Egay. Its from an '86 with a 470. Nice and cheap, so I bought it. . . . . . . . . . . . .

Then I remember about the Split between Gen.1 and 2 was somewhere about 85-86ish. So, of course, now Im worried I just blew another wad of cash that I didnt need to....

Does anyone know fer sure??

Thanks,
Jon.

Alpha I 1986 thru 1990
Alpha I Gen II 1991 to present

I Should really scan and post this Merc Engine/Drive Year Model Reference Chart I have. Goes from 63 to 89.

Re: Whats the split between Gen.1 and Gen.2??

Great list Don, Thanks!

An MC-1 888 has a final drive ratio of 1.50 to 1. An MC-1 898 has a 1.65 to 1 ratio. Does this mean that the 898 has a lower final gear ratio (higher prop shaft speed) or are there any other gears in between that alter this?

Also it seems strange that the 898, which has about 10 higher HP than the 888 would have the lower final drive ratio? Maybe I'm not reading this right but I would figure that if one drive has a higher prop shaft speed at a given engine RPM, it would have a lower gear ratio, ie the higher number, 1.65:1 vs 1.50:1

According to Manual #6 it can be either.....
It says on the newer ones 1:62 is standard....
Some have the 1:47......
The only thing I can see is that it would let you run bigger pitc/diameter prop.....
The 888 are all 1:47......
It might be the lower case gears that make it different....
I'm curious, too.......:/
