WHATS THE LAW FOR TRAWLERS?

Hi,<br />We fish long island sound near port jefferson and have seen a small comercial trawler dragging his nets as close as a mile off the shore.<br />Is what he does legal that close to shore?<br />Bill

Check with your STATES enviromental police or marine fisheries!!!<br /><br />Every state has different regulations!!!<br /><br />Federal ocean laws pertain to every state outside the 3 mile limit!!!

My high school has a research vessel and we trawl nets in Sandy Hook Bay. Since we have a research permit, we're perfectly legal. Next time you see the boat, check the name. If it has "R/V" in before the name, then it's probably legal. They take fish stock assesments in this way.

BTW, if he's dragging a net he's not a trawler, he's a drag boat.
