looking to get the largest family cruiser that i can tow w/out special permits which means i need to keep it under a 9'6" beam. Does anyone have any suggestions for a great family cruiser w a beam 9'6" or less? I would like to get something like a sea ray 290 or cruiser, four winns or something like that w an aft cabin - any recommendations?. does anyone else make a 30-31' w a 9'6" bm ? I plan on keeping it in a slip and then maybe towing it to some of the other great lake 1-2 times a year.

Are you in the US? 8'6" is the widest you can tow without a permit here in the US.

Same regs here. At least in Ontario.

The Ranger Tugs R29 is made specifically for your needs. Like any other 9'6" boat, it needs a wide load permit, but not one that's particularly difficult or expensive to get. It's about the roomiest 29 foot trailerable (and seaworthy) boat you'll find. If you want sleeker looks or higher speeds, you'll need to sacrifice space.

Have you been to any manufacturers' websites? Most are making boats up to 28-29' with narrow beams these days.

Or, are you looking for a used boat? How old? What's the budget? You have a 3/4 or 1-ton rig to tow it with? You're talking 10,000 lbs or more of boat and trailer.

When you get into 30ft boats you are most likely going to be in the 9ft 8 range and boat and trailer are going to be in the 12000lb range combination. If you are going to be towing any distance this will require a hefty truck. Boats in the 8ft 6 range are going to be in the 26-28 ft range.Mine is 30 ft and with the trailer i am at 12500 lbs. but i only tow it 4 times a year 10 miles or so.It is kept in a slip

What year range are you looking into.

not concerned with the tow vehicle -we have plenty experience . i was really looking for opinions on what r the largest cruiser boats available w the 8-6 beam - i want to avoid the special permits. I do know there is a 29 sun dancer w 8-6 and then i hear there was a 30' w 8-6 bm but i can't find one. was curious if anyone makes a 30-31 w an 8-6 bm ad what makes and models? I'm look for 94-2003 and not sure on when the sea ray had there model changes or anyone else for that matter

Like the guys are saying once you start getting over that 26-28 foot the beam starts getting wider.
Our 85 270 (31.6 overall) sundancer is 10 on the beam, I would not want to go back to an 8.6 after having this.
But as you said you do not want the hassel of an overwidth permit.
And YUP, the newer sundancers are a little narrower, but thier layout is alot more cramped than the older ones.

ak23, go to the Searay, Four Winns, Wellcraft manufacturer websites. They all have past model archives with all the specs you need to see.
