I'm new to these forums, so you'll excuse me if this is covered elsewhere.

I live in New Zealand and i'm currently building a 21ft alloy planning boat of american design. Plans purchased from Glen-L designs.
Anyhow, i'm looking to go stern drive (its a trailered boat) and have almost certainly just picked up a Volvo-penta AQAD-40d. (165HP).
Given what i've read on these and other smaller forums, it would be a reasonable choice to go with a duoprop leg.
What is the differenece between a 280 and a 290 DP leg? Also, what sub-types are available for each (i'm guessing this is dependant on the age of the leg) and how do I identify the age/sub-group?

Thanks in advance, and I look forward to reading further into these forums.

The DuoProp part of the drive, is only the lower unit. the rest of the drive, transom shield etc. can be 270, 280, 290 and newer. The DP lower can be installed on any of those drives.
The 280 drives normally didn't have trim, only an electro mechanical lift to tilt the drive up for trailering. 290 and newer all had trim and tilt hydraulically.

If you go to the link below and type in AQAD40B (no - or spaces) you can download an owners manual and some other information on the engine.

You can also post a picture of your outdrive and transom shield for further information. You can also find the drive model number in the location shown below.
