Whats the differnce between a johnson 40hp and 50hp

What is the differnce between a johnson/evinrude 40-50 cylinder ob. Is it carb jetting,timing, or a whole different motor? I and talking about the loop charged late 80's 90's motor.

According to my 1988 parts book, 50 hp. carbs, cyl head, reeds show different part numbers than the 40. Block part # is the same for both.
