How much do you spend on an average fishing trip? My favorite hole is two hours away. With fuel ( truck/boat) ramp, bait, chum, food/drink, boat wash/ flush, ice etc. cost about $ 400.00. I can usually get two other guys to chip in $ 50.00, ea  Of course this doesn't include all the underlining cost.

Wow man. I though I was forking out the dough. If I go to where I can run gas, I usually spend around $100-$125. This is for gas to get there, ramp fees, food, gas on the lake, and bait if I buy it. This is why I bought a smaller aluminum boat, with a small motor, so I can pull it with my Honda Crv and get around 20MPG while towing. Sometimes I just tug my jon boat a few miles away and run electric. These trips typically cost between $25 and $50.

I think saltwater cost a bit moore -200 miles at 9, miles a gallon. 125 gallon tank in boat - twin 150s. I sure some here spend way more.

Oh yeah, I'm sure they do! If you had said "saltwater" in the question I would have definitely stayed out of it! :) Sounds like gasoline is the main culprit in all of our costs. I often rent out a house on the albemarle sound (Nagshead) for a full week, and have a dock right on the sound. Just hop in the boat and head out every day. That takes care of my saltwater fix for a while. If I go on a big fishing trip I just try and stay for at least a weekend or so. Nice to wake up in the morning, and the only motor that has to fire up is the outboard. Sit and drink my cup of coffee as the motor warms up!!

Dude this is the saltwater section? I use to do the same at Rodanthe, and also fish the sound.

Yeah I guess I neglected to take that into account. If I were you I'd ask the guys to throw in a little extra. If they did a charter it's be $400-$800. That's just me though. How many times a year do you typically go?

Striper Fishing - My favorite hole is 80 minutes away (65 miles). The average 6-hour trip (fishing time) uses 25-30 gallons of gas in the boat and another 15 gallons (130/9 mpg) in the truck for a grand total of $160-$180 a day in fuel. Ramp fees, ice, beer, food and tackle add another $50 or so.

Tuna fishing - My favorite hole is 3 hours away (140 miles). We'll use 60-80 gallons of gas in the boat and another 32 gallons (280/9 mpg) in the truck for a grand total of $370-$450 a day plus daily expenses.

Striper fishing I usually take one other angler, sometimes two which helps keep the cost resonable. If tuna fishing, we typically have 4 guys which makes the cost a little easier to shallow.

Yea I could I guess but it is tough just getting the fifty. When my boat was up and running I'd go every other week or so. I think when I get it back together I'll go once a month and make it a 3, day event. I do have a hispanic neighbor that will give me a hundred and bring two friends that will do the same but they get drunk in a couple of hours - start singing ( in spanish ) and pass out. They don't catch much and only the neighboor speaks english. My new rule is no alchohol on my boat so thats that.

Spring Trophy Season (Stripers) starts Saturday at 6 am. I already have 12 trips scheduled in the next 14 days followed by a 3-day tournament the first weekend in May.

Are you a charter captain? Do you go out of OC for Tuna - Jacks Spot? I guess you have to pick your days with a 22'6" as will I.

Re: What's the cost?

The last time I was out, it was really expensive. New battery ($100) gas for the boat ($90), fuel in truck ($75), bait ($50). So far it has cost $315 and I have not fished yet and I am not including the cost of having to replace the timing thingy on the outboard a couple of months ago. Half way out the O/B dies and I have to troll motor back to dock. Rent a boat the next day, ($275) fuel ($100). The result? A beautiful day on the water and one fish…one $690 fish. On average however, it is about $200 to go fishing in salt and about $100 for fresh. It always cheaper to go to the fish market, but not as much fun.

Next time, I'm calling Sasto and chartering him.

Re: What's the cost?

Well, i have a 15 foot tinner, so I am not as high as some here........... Last year i got the boat, trailer, a 6 HP and a 15HP old jonny's for about 2K.......... this year i said screw this and slapped out 3K for a new 9.8 and 6 HP tohatsu's .........what is killing me right now is the VR Racing fuel i use (which has NO ethanol in it at all) went up from 50 bucks for a 5 gallon can to 65 bucks a can .......... my car gets 25MPH with the boat out back, which is good ..............

typicial trip : 100 bucks or so, that includes boat, car fuel, food, bait and dock fees, so not bad at all............

the new motors are awesome on sipping fuel :)

Oh how I wish. I have spent a day trolling for big fish, catching nothing, and returning with a nice sunburn however. A day like that is an easy $400. On this excursion we were going to the back country (Everglades/Chokoloskee) for trout. Yeah....one trout.

Man, $800 (plus basic maintenance) a month on fishing. Wish I could have that kind of budget. :) BTW, that is funny about the neighbor. I think I'd rather just spend the extra $100 than to bring some guys that I couldn't even communicate with! Bahahahaha!!!

I mated on a charter out of Solomons before I got married but never got back into it. These days I mostly fish for fun with several tournaments a years thrown in to keep my skills sharp.

For Tuna, we run out of OI, OC or Chincoteague, whichever is closer or better fishing. The boat size limits my fishing to an extent but not nearly much as my body anymore. The Grady will take 5 times more than I can anymore.

Well it would actually be $300. I use to make way better money. The worst part about those guys was we ( brother and I ) would have a chum slick going and be catching fish regularly - the hispanics would cast as far out as they could away from the chum slick - like they were having a casting contest. I explained that the fish were in the slick. My neighbor understood but in his arrogance , had to do it his way and his buddies followed his lead. They caught maybe 1, to our 20 - literally, and when they did catch one they would get all happy and say see, see - go figure.

Man solomons is so comercial now. When I was a boy my dad would take me there and we would rent a jon boat with a small outboard and fish the navel pier. I once caught 74, small bluefish on a broken back rebel on a ultralight - one of my most memorable days.

Re: What's the cost?

Including truck gas, boat gas, snacks, etc. a day fishing the bay will run me about $30-$40. Add $20-30 more in gas to hit nearshore and fish the kelp. No shortage of boat ho's around here to split the costs.

Anything farther-reaching that that (Mexican waters, 3+ miles offshore) and I'll hop on an open party or do the boat ho' thing myself.

I am saving up to get a bigger boat that will allow me to go farther and spend even more on my hobby.

Re: What's the cost?

I hope you catch $400 bucks worth of fish per outing to make it worth your money&time. my budget for a day of fishing is around $30-40
so usually i can get back my money back on a limit of dungenss&rock crab, so even if i get skunked for salmom or bottom fish it makes it
worth it.
