What's that squealing? Oil pressure alarm?

I have a '98 Regal I/O 2100 LSR. There's an alarm
That starts when I turn the switch key on and
(usually) goes off after the boat is started.
Does this have to do with the oil pressure? ..and if my oil
is okay, how do I disable it?

Why would you want to disable the oil pressure alarm???Kinda like biting off your nose cause it smell's something bad.
Just unhook the wire at the sender and ground it(I think).

Its the general alarm. It comes on if the oil pressure is low or the temperature is high. When the engine isnt running it comes on for the oil and the alternator. While it is annoying, it needs to be pretty loud. If you loose start overheating at 35 mph, you want to know it and you want to be able to hear it. I have seen more than one of my friends crack a head or loose a head gasket from either sucking something up that blocked the water passage or the impeller failing. They had "muffled" the alarm and didnt hear it while out on the lake.

Welcome to iBoats!

Howdy,

If your oil pressure is "ok", you need to FIX it not disable it.

You didn't indicate what Make Model series of the engine and drive you have.

If you have a Mercruiser from that era, It very likely has a High temp, Oil pressure and possibly a drive lube monitor all connected to the same alarm circuit.

The circuit is usually a "ground-to-operate" circuit......meaning that each alarm sensor simply goes to ground when it reaches it's own limit.

You'll also get an alarm if the common wire connected to all the sensors becomes frayed and is grounded anywhere along the way.

You need to fix the problem. Not disable it!

Re: What's that squealing? Oil pressure alarm?

Oil level was low so I added a quart. Alarm still stayed on constant.
One thing I noticed is that my oil pressure gauge never moves -seems stuck.
If this is the case, could that be keeping it alarming?

It's a '98 Mercruiser 4.3L V6.
Engine Model #: 4-211015LS
Serial #: OL033886

...This is the first boat I've owned without an outboard hangin
off the transom, so thanks for your help!

Re: What's that squealing? Oil pressure alarm?

The oil alarm does not activate on low oil quantity.

It is an oil pressure switch that activates at low pressure.

You can test it by removing the wire from the switch. If the alarm still activates then it's not that switch.

similarly, you can remove the wire from the over temp and drive lube monitor (if installed) switches one at a time too.

If the alarm still activates then you have a short somewhere.

You need an OEM service manual so you can have a look at the schematic diagram for your year model.

The manual you choose must be the right one for your engine serial number.

It also appears that your oil pressure gage is defective too. it could be the pressure sender or the gage. You'll have to troubleshoot to determine which.

I'm going to disagree. I have a '00 Regal 1900 LSR with a 4.3. I replaced the motor and put in about 4-4.5 qrts...alarm sounded and drove me nuts on the initial start up...after about 10 minutes...I added oil until it was at the full mark...cranked and alarm was gone.

Oil pressure never changed per the gauges. The alarm sounded when my oil level was 1-2 qts low.

As stated that alarm is oil, engine temp and outdrive lube monitor...you can unplug them one by one and you'll find your issue.

Ayuh,... Then something else was causing the alarm...
There is NO engine oil level sensor to trigger the alarm...

Re: What's that squealing? Oil pressure alarm?

the only thing changed was adding oil.

It was a fresh motor and oil was cold...so pressure may have been a touch high on initial start up...but even when the motor warmed up, the alarm was still there until I added the oil.
