i have my 1985 mercury 115 timed, synchronized, and running perfectly. what is next to squeeze more power/rpms out of this motor? are there any aftermarket upgrades out there for these things? my next move will probably be to experiment with different props.

The best way to gain more power out of your 115, (and I hate to say it because I love the inlines) is trade it in on a larger engine.

Re: whats next?

yes i agree about getting a bigger motor. its just that i love the look and sound of my inline 6. also, from what ive researched, most motors dont seem to have the same power/weight ratio like the 115 does. these inlines are pretty light compared to bigger, more modern motors.

Re: whats next?

Buy a power Jack plate and you can raise the motor higher, then you can run a high pitch surface prop.

Re: whats next?

Octane, I doubt there are any practial motor mods that can be done to increase power. A high performance prop and perhaps a jackplate are the best accessories to add performance. Get a prop with some rake, and jack her up on the transom, with a jackplate. Make sure you monitor the motor's ability to suck in cooling water. You might plug the upper intake hole and elongate the lowest inake hole.

Re: whats next?

hmm i never thought about using a jackplate. ill have to consider that idea. will this make the boat ride higher out of the water? my boat has a very deep v hull and even trimming it up never affects how it rides on the water

#2, #3 and #4 are quick ways to destroy your outboard or reduce its performance.

Bigger outboard is an obvious, but low tech move.

Best opportunity is to fine tune the rigging, height, prop, trim, boat balance and hull condition and leave your engine alone. That is where boating impresarios shine.
