I had plan on looking at this boat over the weekend. Can someone tell me what's going on with the propeller? Is this normal?

The paint gets eaten off by air bubbles! Look at other aluminum props and you will see the same thing.

It depends on where the boat was used it could be the sand or ouster bed it will sand the prop down include the aluminum it self in some but that one looks normal

Ayuh,...

Paint,+ Propellers rarely stay together very long,...

It looks pretty Normal to Me...

If that's an OMC drive,... That would concern Me.....

if you are beaching the boat, the sand eats the paint off really quick. is the prop nick or pieces missing, or just the paint coming off.

Take a close up of the prop. Is that corrosion I see on the upper backside of the outdrive as well?

I wonder if that was once a re-manufactured prop with cheap paint?

Don't know an awful lot about props but the paint on mine is off on the edge of all the blades. Seems pretty normal to me. As long as their are no chips, nicks, things like that, should be OK.

Blow up the last picture he posted. The "worn away" paint is also wearing away the back side of the prop and the case around the prop shaft. The paint also seems to have migrated to the back of the drive right (zinc?) above the caviation plate.

I?m not sure why, but that prop looks out of place on that boat to me. If I were to guess, someone took the stainless prop off of that boat before they put it up for sale and put an old one that was laying around on the boat. I have a prop in my shed that looks a lot like that one.

Is that a big concern if they replaced the prop? Can't I just get a new one? How much do they cost?

Re: what's eating up the propeller

What year is the boat? Looks new enough to me that it is a Volvo SX drive . . . NEED TO BE SURE!!! Also, if the case and skeg look good and the propshaft is straight, then I would not worry about the prop condition at all as it indeed might be from another boat. I am not sure what dingbat is seeing, I can't see any damage to the drive itself no matter how much i mess with the pics . . .

Props run from $50 to $700, from a private party used aluminum, to list price on a high end Stainless Steel.

Maybe some damage from running aground, but its unlucky that it damaged drive its self. But do check the output shaft for bends. If there is not too much wrong with the prop just sand it down and repaint it. A few dings are ok, just take a file to it to smooth it out.

Re: what's eating up the propeller

I didn?t mean that there was anything wrong with the prop at all, actually just the opposite. The poor appearance of the prop might have nothing to do with the boat. You could take the prop off, and have it reconditioned for less than 50 bucks. You will also get a new paint job on the prop. It should come back to you looking brand new.

Re: what's eating up the propeller

It's a Volvo Penta SX outdrive. You can't get a much better drive (IMHO) unless you get the DP. Then you are at the top of the line.
The paint problem may be air bubbles caused by the speedometer pitot tube. It's way to close to the drive and will introduce bubbles into the prop stream. The air bubble will burn the paint off very quicly.
I try to keep anything at least 1 foot away from the edge of the transom shield. On your boat, I wouldn't put anything next to the drive. But mount the speedo and any depth transducers on the hull extentions past the outdrive.

You could recondition that prop or your could just buy a new one, you can get a nice stainless prop for that drive for a few hundred bucks and then just sand that one down and paint it and keep it as a spare.

Whoa nice catch..:p
Plz notice the lack of abrasion on the leading edge of the prop....aka no sand digging...
