What years were there major changes?

I have a 1970 Evinrude 60hp.

I am wondering when Evinrude/Johnson made major changes in their design.

When looking for parts it is sometimes hard to find the exact year and part. Plus I would like to know if I could incorporate some of the newer technology into my older motor. Like getting rid of point type ignition.

I believe from 67-72 the motor were basically the same?

I searched the forums and could not find anything.

Thanks, Mike

68-72 were hydro-electric shifts. and 68/69/70 are not identical to 71/72. there is nothing wrong with the ignition system you have. it is cheaper and easier to maintain, than the new ones.
