I would like to order a manual for my late 60s evinrude 40hp outboard but I cannot find a model or serial #. I looked on the mounting bracket for a plate but cannot find one. The motor has been painted white so a cannot tell by the color. All I have is the emblem on the cowl that says Evinrude Lark IX
Selectric Shift. My mechanic says it is a 67 but does the IX mean anything. IX in roman numbers means 9 I was wondering if it might be a 69. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am new to this forum.
Thanks

Because it's an Evinrude, it may not have a model number but will have a serial number. Look on the motor for a quarter sized, aluminum, domed shaped cap (freeze plug). The numbers on it should be the serial numbers. Then you should be able to find the year. Personally, I think your mechanic is correct but, you can varify with the serial numbers.

1967 is probably right if it's a Lark IX. I had a 1964 Lark which was a Lark VI (6).

The 10th year Lark was '68 so my guess is also a '67.

The 10th year Lark was '68 so my guess is also a '67.

Lark started in '56 as a 30hp, 1957, '58, and '59 are also Lark's but in 35hp.
1960 is the first year of the Lark #'s, '60 is a Lark II 40hp.
Going by the Lark #'s starting in '60, the Lark IX is a '67.

I know '68 is the 10th year by the numbering system, starting with '59 as #1
However I would consider the 1966 Lark to be the 10th year Lark.

Maybe I am just reading to far into this

Thanks, I didn't know about the aluminum cap, it had the model & serial #s on it. I know iboats has repair manuals but does anyone have info for finding owners manual for older motors like this one. I would also like to paint this motor back to its original color, is there anywhere to find pictures of these motors to find the paint scheme?

Actually, Evinrude does put the model number on the welch plug. It's Johnson that typically only uses the serial number.

OK, gbwood, what did you find for a model number anyway? That white one is a 1967, but we would need to know what year you actually have.

Yep, that is a 1967. The year of white Evinrudes. And the previously white Johnsons became green. Stylists had fun that year.
