Re: what year model is my motor

HI six. Welcome to iboats. Based on the tell tale dark green paint job, I believe you have a 1968 Johnson 20 hp. I have a '66 20 hp and love it! They use the much loved 22 cu in enginge block that was used on the 18 hp-20 hp models from the mid 50's- mid 70s. Look on the transom clamp for a small riveted tag with the model and serial number on it. The model number should be FD-22, or so. Here are some handy links. You can get any routine parts you might need right here at iboats. Holler if you get stuck.

Looks to me like it has been painted, which makes visual ID pretty difficult. However, I'd say 1968 is in the general era, based on the shape of the lower unit. Some good views of the powerhead may help, but keep in mind that the basic motor was made for many years.

i bought the boat with remote cable throttle and choke levers and both cables broke on me the first time running it. i would like to go back to the stock tiller setup and do away with the cables and lever setup. what all parts do i need to get to be able to do this? also is there any other year models that will interchange with my motor?

Re: what year model is my motor

Hello again six. It is certainly an early to late 60's FD model Johnson either 18-20 hp. The 20 hp didn't come out until 1966 as the FD-20 model prior to that all FD models were 18 hp. Most parts from other FD models (18-20 hp Johnson outboards) from the mid 50s-mid 60s should be interchangeable. Scrounge around on the transom clamp again. I betcha there's a tag riveted on there somewhere. Mine is on the left side just below the cowl pan, I believe. However, if may be painted over, so look closely. You can easily convert it back to a tiller set up. The tillers themselves are readily available on ebay, marineengine.com, or by placing a WTB ad on aomci.org. You can also find a shift lever at the same sites. They both just bolt in place. Just make sure the two sets of teeth on the gears of the tiller are properly aligned. Here's a great article on your motor, how to maintain it and how to convert to/from controls to tiller along with some of the mods I've made to my '66 20 hp FD-20C. I've added an emergency lanyard kill switch, a jackplate, PVC tiller extender and wooden shifter extender. They've helped improve the overall performance of my boat greatly and allow me to stand amidship while underway. Best of all, I can actually see where I'm going now and I get on plane in about half the time I did before :) You can get routine parts like carb kits, tune up kits, lower unit seal kits, etc... right here at iboats for about $25 each.

Ha :) Thanks B-Dozer! It's pretty sloppy. I just used stuff I had on hand. Here are some of links and pics that gave me the idea.

As for the mystery motor, I'm sticking with a '68 Johnson 20 hp, model FDE-22x (E=electric star), based on the dark green power head and the fact that you still have the good 'ol universal magneto with no external coils. Look at the spots highlighted on the pic below for the riveted tag with the model and ID numbers. If you still can't find it, look for a welch plug on the power head about the size of a quarter and post the numbers you find therein. Don't worry we'll get it figured out
