What year is this mercury motor

Bought this motor and was told it was a 1988 but see that 9.8 were only made up to 1985 serial # is 7214652 can't seem to find this serial number in any of the charts. I know it is from Canada because of the 7. Can anyone help me find what year it is. Also how can you tell which model it is.

It is actually a 1984 Canadian built:

9.8 1984 M 6438338 - 6620195 7208898
9.8 1985 M 6620196 - UP 7219878

As the 1985 year begins with 7219878 which is higher than yours, you have a 1984.

Thanks for the information. 2 more questions

first how do you tell it is a 1010204 model and 2nd on the cowiling cover it has a brown band on it most mercury motors I see have a blue or red band. Does the colour mean anything. Most pictures I see of 1984 mercury motors have blue band

The model number is derived from the s/n of the engine, once entered into a search engine.

Though I never place much faith in the banding colours unless I know for certain that the cowls are original to the engine, yours are brown and you can verify it here:
