I was just given this older Merc. OB serial number 3877731. It says 85 HP on the cowl. Has a failed main bearing (crank is trash) but the rest seems to be decent.<br />Any ideas?

Re: what year is this merc?

Thanks for the reply Corn. I 'was' thinking of a repair. I have a lathe here with grinding attachment. I could grind the scored main journal under & chrome plate. Then I noticed another prob. on the crank - a rod journal has a big divot about .015 deep, apparently caused by corrosion. To me means crank is junk. I really have no use for the motor - was going to be a winter project. Looks like a parts motor now since I don't want to spend the $$ to for parts. Too bad. It appears the thing had just been overhauled. The rest is real clean. A friend saved it from the dump - he saw the previous owned tossing it in a fit of rage - had cut up the boat with a chain saw!!

Yes Corm, a chainsaw. I wish I was there in person. Since I have no use for the motor, I am going to leave it alone. I'll let someone else mess with it. If I had a use for the motor I definatlely would fix it. My dad has a real oldy - an Evinrude from the 20's or 30's that I will play with instead. Horizontally opposed 2 cylinder with no throttle, only a timing control. The thing has a rudder. He can't get it going.
