I need to know what year this motor is, I'm guessing it's a '56. It quit pumping water and when I took it apart the upper leg and water pump housing were all covered in sludge, I think the base gasket on the power head was leaking. The impeller was missing 3 out of 6 fins.

Hi Shaffer
You are correct, your motor is a 1956 model. The powerhead to exhaust gasket may have been leaking. I don't think that would have anything to do with the sludge. I would think the sludge problem would be caused by running an over rich mix of fuel\oil, or and overly rich carb setting, and run in a test tank. These motors use a 24:1 ratio, so they are a little oily anyway. Check your lower unit oil.

Hey thanks for the confirmation on the year, and what else would cause that much sludge, it looked like the motor was ran through a Exxon oil spill,

It's my brothers motor and I'm fixing it for him. He enter the LCI(Lake Champlain International) Fishing Derby. The lower unit oil is light brown, I don't think it's leaking much. It may be leaking under the water pump, at the top of the lower unit.

Hi Shaffer
As long as you have it apart, you might as well test the the L\U for presure and vac. Then you will know how bad it leaks, (if it dose). If it leaks just a little bit, it leaks bad. Besides all the oil that some guys spray all over their motor, there are only two places it can come from, the fuel tank and the lower unit, take your pick.
