Re: what year is this 50 hp Merc and is the stator toast?
Do yourself a favor when you pick up new set of points... get two!!!

I change mine every year... good, bad or ugly... it doesn't matter, then put old set in glove box, then take out glove box set & put in boat toolbox in truck... How many times have I gone to a dock to get gas or beverages, have I seen a guy sitting there bangin away at his engine & 6 kids sweating & spending thier old man's money in bait shop & all he wants to do is get on the water... 15 minutes later he is gone because I take the time to get my tools & put my old set in his & he is ready to go... had one guy offer me $100.00 because his day was not ruined, told him no charge but next time he saw someone broken down... STOP & HELP them & he said he would...

Water/Moisture is a killer of metal... even if you cleaned them they still won't start... as for feeler gauges... use 'em unless you have a good eye!!!

Best advice I can give...

------------------
"Keep it between the Bouys & Good Luck"

fone_man
