I have recently purchased an older 50 hp Merc the 4 cylinder. I was curious what year it is-serial number 1844663 and since there is no spark at any cylinder is the stator toast?
I would greatly appreciate any assistance as although I am a woman I'm pretty handy with a wrench

Hi,
It is in the 60s. This motor has a distributor on it. It sounds to me like the points are either corroaded or closed up an need to be regapped. Set them at .009-.010.
The dist is on the port side of the motor held on by 4 3/8head bolts. The dist spline has a flat spot in it so you can't get it back in wrong.
...have fun...corm

Thanks for the information on the year of my motor Fone Man it should come in handy.

Corm I pulled the distributor and cleaned the points with some emery paper. They appeared to be stuck together and covered with a white corrosion. I couldn't find my feeler gauges though but I could tell there was a gap. However after reassembling I still have no spark. Do you think I should have searched harder for my feeler gauges or do you suspect something else. It appears to me that the dist has been opened before perhaps they have had similar problems?
I haven't been able to contact the guy I bought it from so I would appreciate any more assistance you could give me.
Thanks...

Do yourself a favor when you pick up new set of points... get two!!!

I change mine every year... good, bad or ugly... it doesn't matter, then put old set in glove box, then take out glove box set & put in boat toolbox in truck... How many times have I gone to a dock to get gas or beverages, have I seen a guy sitting there bangin away at his engine & 6 kids sweating & spending thier old man's money in bait shop & all he wants to do is get on the water... 15 minutes later he is gone because I take the time to get my tools & put my old set in his & he is ready to go... had one guy offer me $100.00 because his day was not ruined, told him no charge but next time he saw someone broken down... STOP & HELP them & he said he would...

Water/Moisture is a killer of metal... even if you cleaned them they still won't start... as for feeler gauges... use 'em unless you have a good eye!!!

Best advice I can give...

------------------
"Keep it between the Bouys & Good Luck"

fone_man

Try some 600 grit wet or dry sand paper.Look for the feeler gauge. Before you put it back
on spin the shaft to see if you have spark.
If the coil cover it soft like neopreem you should replace it. Make sure no wires are grounding out. Leave the ing switch wire off the outside of the dist to elminate the ing switch when you test it. The pts cost $35,the
coil is $90 if I remember right, so be sure before you spend your money. If you can.
good luck...have fun...corm
