What year is my Nissan motor?

Hi guys,

I have a 70 H.P. Nissan outboard motor and I really would like to know what year it is. I was told it is a 1992 and I was also told it was a 1991. I want to buy a manual for it, and the manuals go from 1992 to 2015 or 1991 and older. Need to know what manual to order.

My model number on my motor is NS70A2. Can the model year be determined by this model number? ALSO, I thought this motor has a charging system on it. I have a volt meter in the dashboard that shows the battery is getting charged, but I do not see an alternator or generator inside under the hood. Can it have some type of other charging system on it other than an alternator or generator? thanks.

Year is irrelevant, model is all, better order a OEM Tohatsu Service Manual for that specific model, won't find a alternator or generator under the hood, if bat is charging should have a solid state charger side to powerhead.

As SeaRider said, you just need model number to get the correct manual.

If you are curious though and you want to know the actual year of production, go to http://tohatsu.com/contact.html and select "How can I find the year of my motor". You'll need the serial number and put your contact info in and they'll send you an email. I got mine within a day of submittal.

Thanks, I will get a manual for the Tahutsu motor, but again, wouldn't I need to know the year of the motor to get the correct manual? The years are indicated on the manuals from what I am seeing, and not the model numbers, so I do not know whether to get a 1992 -2013 manual or 1991-older manual??

Thanks for the information. I will send in the serial number and find out what year it is. I do not want to spend $30 on a manual then find out it is for the wrong year. If the manuals have the model numbers listed and I can find out if it covers my model, then I would be all set, but all I see on the manuals is the years listed, but not the model numbers.

Are those OEM Tohatsu manuals ? Curent 2 strokes 70 HP OB upgraded model is M70C, so yours is previous older one. Ask Tohatsu if Service Manual for M70C is compliaint with 70A2 model, there should some parts difference along codes between both models on the Spare Parts Manual.

You can also use that same link to email them all your known info and they could probably tell you exactly which manual to order

As Luis noted, year is irrelevant. Tohatsu/Nissan OB's are identified by model/serial. Don't bother with an aftermarket manual, such as the clymer manuals, etc. They are too general to be of much value. Get a real OEM manual from a Tohatsu dealer (sorry, iBoats is not a Tohatsu dealer). The book you need is:
SERVICE MANUAL : 3 & 4 CYLINDER 2-STROKES

003-21036-1_lg.jpg

Description Covers all 3 & 4 cylinder 2-stroke models.
Part #: 003-21036-1
List Price (MSRP): $50.00

The alternator is under the flywheel, and feeds a rectifier/regulator bolted to the block.

I have a two cylinder, two stroke 70 h.p. motor. I have been in touch with the Tahatsu company concerning the manuals. They are telling me the part number is oo3-21035-1. I am telling them that the charts indicate that this number they gave to me is for a 2.5 to a 30 h.p. two stroke, and the number you just gave me is for a 50 to 140 h.p. two stage. They are telling me that the 21036 number is wrong. I just got done sending them the link where I read this info that agrees with you on the numbers, except it is for the two stage, 2-cyl. motor.

UPDATE: I finally got the news about the service manual for my motor. Not good! I have a 70 H.P. Nissan, 1990 model, two-stroke, 2- cylinders. In 1992, they quit making the two cylinder 70 H.P. motors and went to a three cylinder. There are no manuals available for my 70 H.P. two cyl., two-stroke outboard motor. I may or may not be able to find a used one somewhere. If anyone on here knows where I can possibly buy a used one that would be for my motor, PLEASE let me know where it is, PLEASE!!

What a pitty, you have a real dinosaur OB. 2 strokes, 3-4 cylinder Service Manuals only mentions 70B and C models, both 3 cylinder ones. What precisely info do you need ?

Iggy,

Check ebay. There are two on there now. Not sure if they are exactly what you're looking for though. One is the service DATA manual and one says service INFORMATION manual. Both seem to have specs for the motors but might not have the procedure stuff that a normal service manual has.

Ah yes. 70A2. Good in its day, but that day is past. Impellers are still available, but no wp kits. No carb kits, either. Very few parts available at all. Elvin at Solution One in Tampa may have a parts catalog or a service manual. Those other manuals suggested won't help you do any repairs.

Nothing specific at all. I just would like a manual so if I have a problem, I may be able to deal with it on my own. Just the other day, I need a tilt trim realy switch because my motor would not go down. Tahatsu has them and wants $100 for one of them, and they recommend replacing both (naturally) at the same time. Tahatsu is the manufacturer of my motor (2-Cyl two stroke motor). ALL other motor tilt relays around town cost about $15, I'm talking about Johnson, Evinrude, Chrysler, Mercury, etc. I start digging, and I found the same part, the same part number at a water sports store on line. The relay is sold for a jet ski starter motor relay, and it costed me $11.23 each. I bought a pair of them. I put them in and the tilt trim now works great.

So, I do tend to tinker a little bit with my motors on my own and am just trying me darnest to find a service manual for the motor ahead of the time I really need it. Thanks.

Thanks for your input. I saw these on E-bay the other day. I am trying to find a service manual, but for the lack of them, I just may order the ones that you posted here. They would certainly be better than not having anything at all, that's for sure!

Tahatsu is telling me that the Nissan and Tihatsu motors and the same, and Tahatsu is the manufacturer of the Nissan motors. They have the same parts for the Tahatsu 70 H.P. as the Nissan 70 H.P. motors. But I do not know if Tihatsu ever had a 70 h.p. 2 cylinder motor???

GOOD NEWS GUYS: I got a call from the Tahatsu factory. They did find ONE copy of the manual that I need. It in their service department at the factory. The guy told me that they decided to sacrifice the one and only copy of the service manual so they could scan it page by page and send me a PDF file by E-mail, which they did. They said they were glad that I brought the fact up to them that the Tahatsu dealers are selling the wrong manuals to their customers (they are selling the 3 cyl. manuals to cover the 2 cyl. motors) YEAH!!!!!

I'm lost here, are you sure it's a 2 stroke 2 cylinder, single or dual carbed 70A2 OB. If so should be mentioned under the 1-2 cylinder service manual that covers up to the 2 cylinder 40C OB. Surely it's a 3 cylinder OB, just not mentioned on latest 3-4 cylinder Service Manuals.

It is surely a 2 cylinder motor. The manual they sent me the PDF file for is the 2 cylinder motor that I have. It is a 1990, 70 H.P. 2 cylinder, 2 stroke motor. The rep from Tohatsu told me that the dealerships are selling the manuals that range from a 50 horse power motor up to a 140 hoarse power motor to cover this 2 cylinder motor, and the manuals they are selling are for 3 cylinder motors. I have one of the few 2 cylinder 70 H.P. motors that Tohatsu built and they built them for Nissan. Nissan went out of business and Tohatsu took over for them, lock, stock & barrel. The Tohatsu motors and the Nissan motors are identical, same motor, per this rep that I spoke with from the factory. He sent me an 87 page PDF file which is a copy of the only service manual around. They had it in their possession and decided to take every page out of the book, scan it and send it to me in a PDF file so I can copy it (they sent it to me and all their dealerships were notified that the correct manual for the 70 H.P 2 cylinder motor is available on a PDF file for their use too).

He also told me thanks for bringing this problem to him (that the dealers are selling the wrong manuals for the Nissan 70 , two cylinder motors. The dealers themselves are unaware (apparently) that there are some 70 H.P 2-cylinder motors out here. The 2 cylinder service manual only covers their 2 H.P up to the 40 H.P. motors, when in reality, there is a 2 cylinder 70 H.P. motor alive and well. I have one!
