Re: what year is my evinrude

Welcome to iboats. your motor is a 1985, there can be several factors in the problems you describe.
is the engine running hot. does it have a good pee stream 100 % of the time. the pee stream is just an indicator, that the impeller is pumping, not that the thermostats are opening and cooling the motor.
is this a salt water motor? have you tried pumping the priming bulb when it does this, if that corrects it, it points to the fuel pump.
i assume you are using a built in fuel tank, are you sure the tank vent is clear? using a fuel/water separator, when was filter last changed?
then we get to the coils and power pack.

Re: what year is my evinrude

i just got the boat not to long ago and when i first got the boat i drained out the fuel. refilled (full) and went to the lake and ran it for about 4 hrs skiing.
everything was fine till i was on my way back to the ramp thats when it bogged down and kicked back in.
The next week i went back out and it was worse it bogged down the same it just didn't kick back in to normal power it was full throtle only going 12mph.
the motor didn`t sound like it was miss firing just no power then it died and would not start so i noticed the primer was leaking fuel replaced and no leaks starts runs but still no power won`t even plan out?????thats when i was told to check coil and power pack or stator allembley....pumping the bulb didn't help. don't notice anything wrong with gas not getting there. pumped gas with hose off and gas flows fast..also is there a certain kind of stabilezer to use or same for a car????also what the gas/oil ratio???

Re: what year is my evinrude

your engine should have VRO which is not totally reliable, VRO 2 is better, so you should not have to mix gas, although if it have been disabled, which is likely the fuel/oil mix is 50/1. we recommend using seafoam as a fuel additive/stablizer.

now, let's get down to business, check the spark on all cylinders, then check compression. lets see where we go from the these are the basic of a good engine. post the results.

i turned the motor by hand and my friend held the plug and watched all plugs spark (one at a time). held his finger over where the plug goes and you could not turn by hand till finger came off hole. so it feels like good compression...... the motor was rebuilt before i got it by lake marina...It used to be a search and rescue boat for the
US army corps of engineers.
