i have a 1448 all weld mod v with a 25 hp suzuki on it and i need to raise it about 2 inches to have it set right, besides raising it i want to increse the performace by getting better top end and be able to run a little shallower at full speed. My 2 options are a jack plate or trim and tilt. now what i am confused about is what one to get, what will be the best for both worlds? will a jackplater increase speed as much as a trim? and will a trim help run shallower like like a jackplate at wot? and both units i am looking at have a 5 in setback. thanks for the help

Re: what would you do?

tnt will change the angle of the motor, which will change the attitude of the boat. It may cause the stern of the boat to be lowered, which would be counter productive to running shallower.

Some aftermarket tnt units will allow you to raise the mounting height as well, so it is a jackplate with tnt.

If you want power tilt, then spend the money on one that will allow the motor to be mounted higher.

If you don't need power tilt, then don't waste the money, just get a jackplate.

A TH Marine Hi Jacker, or a TH Marine Mini-Jacker should do the trick.

do they make any adjastbable jackplates that you can put clamp on motor on to? and also would a jackplate help with top end as much as a trim ould?

Jack plate would seem to be the way to go for a 25 HP
You can make one if your crafty enough.
Use some 3 inch aluminum channel strategically cut on an angle then use a double thick piece of 3/4 plywood all sealed up with some kind of marine varnish.
Piece of cake.

Re: what would you do?

i have thought about just building one but i like the idea of a adjustable jackplate so i can fine tune it for the situation i will be in such as my load and the type of water i will be in sometimes i am in choppy water and someties i will be in skinny rivers. dose anyone have any suggestions on what manual jackplate would be easy to adjust and what will suit ro clamp on motors? i have been looking atthe thmarine pro hijacker and a cmc power lift i just cant findanything that says they will fit a clamp on motor.

I'm going to break your heart on this. If your motor has the wrong shaft for your boat then you need to change motors. ANY jack plate will also add stress to a transom on a small aluminum boat.

Regardless of the amount of money you want to spend to get a manual jack plate .....you will NOT improve the performance of a 25 HP to any significant point. If it is more speed and shallow running..... you either need a different boat or a bigger motor. What is your speed now by GPS? Even if you installed a jack plate and gained 2 mph the weather/water conditions can rob you of that speed. You are NOT racing in a Bass tournament and you can not compete for speed with a 25.

The key is reliable. If you know you are going into shallow water then adjust the trim up and do it. Wide open throttle in shallow water is an invitation to a destroyed lower unit. A properly trimmed motor and the right speed is what you want.

Save your money.

Re: what would you do?

bob, i have a long shaft motor and a long shaft transom so i have what i need as far as that goes, as for transom stress that wond be an issue cuz its a 05 grizzly all weld its a very solid boat and a very solid transom, from what everyone has told me a jackplate weill help me the most the river i run is vary muddy so it dose not hurt my lower unit to much plus i run with my motor unlocked so it kickes up if i do hit. also my cav plase it about 3 inches lower then it should be so i need some way to get it up a little bit and every inch i can get will help. You say that a cmc trim would be better then a jackplate manual or hysrolic?? also i have talked to a few people that says they have had a gain from there jackplate in speed and they love them but i am just trying to see what will work the best before i spend money on either a trim or a jackplate

Bob beat me to it, I run shallow parts of the river....but not at any speed. I think you are looking for trouble. It's a 25....use it the way it was intended, get you there and have fun! Just my 2 cents?
