What went first? The starter or the flywheel?

Engine is an inboard crusader 270. Today I installed a new starter, cranked the engine and it started right up. Turned it off. Went to start it again and crunch...... Took out the starter and the starter housing around the benDix drive was...is cracked. Along with this, the flywheel is missing 4 teeth.

I have changed many starters and engines, however I have never seen this. Did the starter crack the teeth on the flywheel or did the missing teeth crack the starter housing?

I have seen this many many times

I would think a previos starter damaged the flywheel to the point the new starter completed the damage causing a misalignment of the drive causing the gears to climb up and broke the starter housing on the new starter.

Lets see ya say that all fast 10 times.
