Hi,

Yesterday I picked up the boat and first step was to remove the Mercruiser sterndrive. Engine is a Mercruiser 165HP.
Gimbal bearing still moving smooth. Gimbal bellow in good condition. U-joint is moving smoothly and no play issues.

BUT: quite some oil in the bellow.
I suppose that there is a very low propability that this comes from the engine. So most likely the oil seal from the upper part of the drive is leaking.

Next steps I will take:
1. Remove the top-lid of the upper part with the 4 bolts and visualy inspect the inside bearing/gear (need to order a socket...).
2. Drain the oil (I only see a oil screw in the bottom part of the drive and a vent in the upper part)

Question as next step:
3. Do a pressure test (10psi I read somewhere) OR start disassembly of the upper part?

Or any other suggestions for the next step?

Should I have created a seperate post for this question? (first steps in this forum)
Does anyone know what type of sterndrive this is? R or MR? (see picture).
It has this eye on the top to lift the drive.
(I know it needs cleaning up)

What year is the boat the drive came with? If you're able to match a year, one of the following links ought to be your parts catalog for it,

165 1970-1977

165 1978-1981

Best to do (plus set up to do before hand) a pressure test first to see if maybe something else might be leaking too then you're ready to retest after re-sealing upper drive shaft housing since that will be where the oil you found came from.

Check the u-joint yoke that the oil seal rides on. Often these get grooved and will ruin a new seal in a short time. The fix is to replace.

Gear lube or engine oil? Have you carefully checked OD? If not leaking lube, it has to be engine. How much is much? Is it worth all the work for a missing quart a season???

I have used Speedi sleeves many times on that yoke. Never a problem.
Any NAPA or or bearing supply warehouses should have one.
You can also order one directly from Speedy sleeve’s website.

or Amazon. If you have time to wait a week for it to arrive. I found last June that it was half the price of the same thing at my local bearing house, which did not have it in stock and would take a couple days to get also.
