If you go wireless, reset default password, or neighbors and drive-bys can enter your system.

Get up in the rafters like I did a few years back. Hang by your toes and drill thru the wall plates, drop your little nut tied to a string, then pull her out of the hole you cut in the wall. Now you can pull your cat5 wire thru and you don't have to sweat the wireless stuff.8)

I still run "G". In a 1700 sq ft house there isnt anywhere in it or on the back patio where I dont have an "excellent" connection. The main router is in the family room, then I have a cable from there going into the basement where I have 2 wireless extenders mounted in the joists. (branching from a network switch).

MiMo is nifty stuff.

N is still new and therefore expensive.
G works just fine for the average user, and is well established.

Whatever you chose, make sure you use WPA security for your wireless connection; WEP is easily hacked.

Ive got G and love it. Never have any problems with it. Its a Linksys, and gives you the option of putting the Computers Physical address( MAC address) in to allow access. Even if you can break the 128 ecryption you still cant get access until you put the MAC address in.

My main concern is how it will effect download speed's, you cant imagine how narly the kids get when one of them is downloading a big file and slow's the rest of them all down.............ohh and of course they seem to all be on at the same time.........

I leaning towards the MIMO for it's extended range but i have no actual experinence with it......

I'm still using 802.11b for most of my computers, which is still way faster than you need for most applications. The only time you would ever make use of something faster is if you're moving very large files (hundreds of MB) all the time. If your internet connection is 2mbps, then every type of wireless network you will find is faster than that. The cheapest thing you can find will work perfectly.

What are you guys hiding on your computer that's so secret? Child porn? Nuclear secrets? Your diabolical plan to overthrow the government? My wireless network has been wide open for as long as I've had one...about 6 years. If anyone is in the neighborhood feel free to log on. ;)

I get 10Mps with wireless which is pretty standard. Unless I am downloading something big, I don't notice the difference between the wireless and wired.

Thanks for that great input.

Anyone with any knid of network/ security knowledge knows that there is not a all in 1 package for security, There are layers and that is one of them that tropolla stated.
I have compared this to the tiny lock on your front door. People can get in if they want to, you add to that to make it more secure if that is your choice. Or leave it open if you want. Up to the user.

Some people use tax software and home banking and might not want that compomised. Doesn't have to be some like porn that they want to hide and keep safe.

I use G and it is fine. But by adding wireless, you still only have so much bandwidth, so if the kids are downloading large files on the PC, the wireless will still be slow.

So wirless by itself will not further restrict bandwih? In my case i have verizon dsl 3mb dn and 500 up, and if i have this right G, Mimo or N just increase the range progressively as you go up and not improve data speed
? That is degrade the speed

That is correct. The pipe is only so big. Kinda like taking a bucket of water and pouring it down a funnel, it will only handle so much. The bigger the funnel, the more you will get through it. So with the wireless your still trying to get the same amount of data through the same pipe.

Hehe... my customers want the BEST security possible. I tell 'em let's seal the whole thing in concrete and sink it in the Atlantic. Usually they're willing to work backward from there to the amount of inconvenience and expense they're willing to deal with.

Everyone wants to pay for a one-time $39.99 box-o-security and be done with it. Ain't happenin'

Ok what about disabling SSID broadcast, does this help to "secure" the wireless routers? I use a netgear WGR614v5. At the moment I have SSID turned off and a long password.
