What type of Tires?

I am in need to replace my two tires on my old Escort trailer. Right now they have some old Futura Car Radial tires on it. I am trying to figure out if I should just go with Radial tires or go with the real Trailer tires.

The boat is an 88 Bayliner 19 1/2' Capri with a Force 125hp engine. I am guessing it weighs about 1600-1900 pounds.

The rims are 14 inch, but I will have to replace at least one, but most likely both, because one rim is bent.

Any information on what tires to put on this trailer would greatly be apreciated.

Thanks,
Bryan Cox

Re: What type of Tires?

Ahoy, Bry.

No brainer. Go with trailer tires. Automobile tires do not have the sidewall strength for trailers.

Radial trailer tires will give slightly higher mileage and longer life, but cost more. If you do a lot of high speed, long distance towing I recommend them.

Bias ply trailer tires will cost less and give good service in more normal use.

You are quite lucky that the auto tires lasted long enough to need replacing. :)

There is a good primer on trailer tires on www.championtrailers.com.

All good tire/rim packages. Decent prices, too.

Jb,
I have been calling around and it seems that I can get the Same size Radial/Trailer version tires from Discount Tire co, here in town for 60 per tire. Now, I have one bent Rim, can I use any standard Rim or are they also special rims?

Thanks for all your help,
Bryan Cox

Re: What type of Tires?

Bry
I would go with the ST type radial tires.
The rim will need to have the same number of bolts and same spacing.
If you go to any saltwater I would buy a galvanized rim that matches your other rim.
If have brakes I would try and find same exact rim.

Re: What type of Tires?

I would take the boat to a public scale that truckers use, or the dump, and get the actual weight on the tires. Then you will know the load capacity that will be required of your tire(1/2 of axle wt.). The load capacity of a tire is found on the sidewall. My trailer, when I bought it, had automobile radials, at about 1/2 rated capacity of the actual weight on the tires.

Bry21317
If you are still in the market, you get the entire wheel and tire for less at Agri Supply on Highway 70 in Garner. They sell them seperatly but will mount them for free while you wait. Good Luck
