what type of set up is this?

I just bought this boat and I am working on changing out all the bad pumps and electric motors.
I am not familiar with live wells and such so I drew up a quick sketch of my set up. I am getting a replacement pump tomorrow.
As far as I can tell there is a drain in the bottom that goes to side of hull. There is a pump in the hull that brings in water from under boat then sprays it into the well.
I don't see any kind of aerator. Is there supposed to be a stop in the drain to open and close to recycle water? thanks

Most of the ones I've seen there is a stand tube that fits in just tight enough to hold in place. The height of the tube is the depth you want the water in the well. The pump fills the well until that height then the excess drains down the tube and out. Then at the end of the day you pull the tube out and the well drains all the way. You do have to watch that your pump doesn't run faster than the tube drains though otherwise the well over flows.

On the one I had the pump went faster than the drain. In a typical day of fishing I would fill the tank. Shut the pump off. Every couple of hours I'd run the pump to replenish the water and bring the level close to over flow and shut it off again. The tank would go back to normal water level while I fished away. This always worked for me and the fish were still lively ta the end of the day.

When using a live well, the pump pulls water in through a thru-hull fitting under the waterline of the boat. The water is aerated as it comes into the livewell. There is a tube that goes into the bottom of the livewell that is roughly 3/4 the height of the well itself. When the water reaches the top (it's an overflow tube), the extra water runs out the tube, back into the lake/river/ocean.
The flow into the well is determined thru an adjustable fitting on the spigot. You adjust it with the valve pictured so that the same amount of water coming in equals the amount of water running out. This ensures an adequate flow of freshly oxygenated air to the bait. Until you kill them.

thanks for all the info. That's what I was looking for. The stand pipe is missing. Makes since now.

If you are not going to be using the livewell and want to use it for storage, you should put a expandable rubber plug in the drain so water doesn't back feed into livewell and get everything in it wet. Also, our boat has 2 livewells and 1 switch/pump. If I want to use only 1 livewell, I turn the valve off at spray head on one I don't want/need to use.

Thanks. This has a ball valve on the intake side of pump to close off.

You may have a setup that uses a pump to pump out the water from the well. These will no have an overflow pipe. Need to verify that there is not a pump in line with the drain hole and the hull fitting. There are different types of set ups.
