What type of lower unit gear oil for a 1983 Mariner 40 C EL?

I have fouled oil in the lower unit of my mariner 40C EL and I am wondering which gear oil this takes. I am also looking for the manual for this motor. I believe it was made by yamaha the name plate says it was made in Japan. Thanks.

Im not sure if this is model or serial # but it is on the plate 6E9 L 409049 and it says made in Japan.
