Re: What type of gun for my 10-year old.

My first gun was a 20g. Stevens double barrel. I think that was a good choice because, it is a good squirrel gun, gsve me confidence in my hunting ability without killing my shoulder, gave me a limited amount of shots to fire at one time, so shot placement became a priority ...

Always closely supervise the youngster, but when they see what a gun will really do, instead of what a video game gun will do, they will have more respect for that gun, and be much more careful and less likely to point it at someone later on in life.

What ever weapon you chose, 22, 410, 20g, all are good starter guns, and I am sure your dad will be pleased as punch with his gift!

Well James, since you asked ;)
Now I'm not going to say that scatter guns are for girly guys who never learned how to aim! :D BUT

When I was 10 I got to trade my Daisy BB gun in for a single shot bolt action 22 rifle!

Seriously though I think a single shot, shot gun/rifle is the only way to go for a young shooter.

It teaches them 3 things at the same time.

A: To make their first shot count
B: If they do miss to watch the game when it runs or flys and reload while tracking.
C: Patience

Thats my .02 and the way I learned.
btw at 10 I was only allowed to use my rifle when with my dad or his best friend.

James, I'd seriously look at a Thompson Center setup...the guns are like Mac and Snapon tools ! ! Rugged, dependable and LIFETIME Warranty. I sent one in that I bought at a pawn shop obviouvsly abused and they replaced everything that was messed up and had a blemish on it for FREE!! Go to their web site and check them out.

Now that is an option! I really do want to start him off with a single shot "something". I'm torn between .22 and 410. I (he) could have both. :D

If you have an Acedemy around they have the 22/410 combo for $109 and change. The after thanksgiving sale had it for $98.

Bolt action .22 and/or a bolt action 12 ga.

Why a 12? It will make him/her respect the weapon.

James you just cant beat that rossi combo.Like I said i have the 20 gauge barrel for my daughters and it kicks the snot out of you. The 410 would be easier on the shoulder, but shell are 3 times as high.(which sucks :( )The cricket 22 that someone mentioned is a good gun but it is pretty small for a 10 year old (or will be soon) The rossi is big enough for even ole dad to shoot fairly comfortably.

EDIT: I gave you the wrong link there James. Here is the right one:

http://www.rossiusa.com/products/product-details.cfm?model=S411220RS&category=MATCHEDPAIR

Go with the 20 gauge. Shells ,are cheaper than .410 and kick can be controlled by buying lower velocity shells until he gets bigger. A 20 gauge will do him for a number of years and like JB says, a .410 is for experts and would, really handicap him. Chipmonks are cute but he will quickly outgrow it. With a 20 gauge he will be able to do some serious hunting with his grandads guidance. Go for, it.

When I saw the subject for this thread I thought it was a joke.
Here in Australa if you gave your 10 Year old a rifle, you would probably have you child take into care by the authorites and you would charged with putting a child in danger.
I am not saying that the American system is wrong, just that the average aussie views firearms differant from the average US citizen

Thank God, this post has followed real life suggestions about how to teach a young man how to hunt.....rather than idiots telling you how wrong it is to let your son learn the propper way to handle firearms. For the most part, the above advice is right......long live the second amendment.

Re: What type of gun for my 10-year old.

My son is 9 and weighs around 100 lbs. He hunts with a 30-30 and has shot my 30-06 and my brothers .270 several times (never alone, always with me). He has shot skeet with a 20 gauge.

I would say it depends on his size rather than his age.

My first gun was a 20 gauge, still use it throw lead up at dove. :D

Ken
