I've never been sailing or boating outside of a motorboat or pontoon. I'd really like to get a boat I can live on and sail to other countries (not just looking to cruise the coasts).

I've looked (online) at Swift trawlers, catamarans and yachts (all unaffordable brand new)

Is there a way to do this without being a millionaire?

Probably not, the upkeep on a boat especially the boat your wanting is more than a millionaire can cough up. No matter what size it is they all are a hole in the water and gobble up the coin.. but it's always nice to dream...

Not only the cost, but even more important is experience on the ocean ! Big water is no place to learn, more than a few have lost their lives or given up boating completely do to scary situations on the ocean !! If you don't have at least ten years of serious boating experience, and I mean serious, the ocean is no place for a beginner.

First, get some experience by joining a sailing club. Make friends with people who like to sail and network with them. They can get you onboard and show you the basics and also help you to understand how things work. After that, If you’re near the coast you might get lucky and land a crew spot on a sailing yacht delivery.
I’m not a sailboat guy but have owned cruising powerboats for a couple decades now. Airshot is right, open water voyages are no place for beginners. Yes it’s exciting at times, but It has a serious learning curve that’s best done gradually with safety always in mind. Good luck!

Check out Cruisers Forum. This place is more for small sub-35' powerboats and day sailors. But to answer your question: the only thing that works on an old boat is the owner. If you want to do this, you can, but you better learn how to be handy and get down and dirty, otherwise you have to be a multi-millionare with a crew.

Besides all of the above, check into problems you may encounter from lawless sources in the open water. Hollywood has made numerous moves about such events and with the drug trade and other sources, you may get more than you bargained for.
