I have a Volvo 290 and the tilt motor/pump finally went, as far as I can tell. It was in the boat when I bought it 4 years ago and it looked shabby then. There is a serious leak in the system somewhere. Last season i noticed this as I saw a huge slick off my transom. I stopped using the tilt. I assumed it was a leak somewhere outside the boat, maybe the cylinders. But, the other day i filled the resevoir up and my father activated the tilt. I did not see a single drop land on the driveway. We did, however notice a leak from the underneath of the pump (not where the fluid lines go in). I cant explain how the slick got in the water, unless i have a trim tab fluid leak as well. Nonetheless the fluid is leaking from somewhere because the resevoir was dead empty. The electric motor on the thing is shotty too. It is very fickle about when it works. (It may raise all the way up and then decide not to go down)

So I am prepared to buy a whole new motor/pump. Can anyone tell me which one I will need. The old one is very old looking and im not sure it's even made anymore. The old one had a tag on it marked: SAE J 11771 197 Prestolite. The yellow label on the motor is all in Swedish or German. Thanks for any help!

That J11771 number isn't a part number. Just that the item can be used in a gasoline powered boat.
Which type pump do you have?

Volvo sells a replacement pump kit for that pump.
The part number is 3586765 and retails for just over 500 bucks.

They can be rebuilt. You may want to check Ebay,I bought a great working pump and motor for my OMC for 70 bucks..
Also make sure the connections on the solenoids are shiny clean..

The part number I gave is for a kit to replace the early style pump. The early style pumps are NLA, and there never were repair parts for them.

Re: What trim/tilt motor/pump for Volvo 290?

Thanks for the input guys. I wound up taking out the pump and bringing it over to my local starter/alternator rebuild guy. He is gonna rebuild the motor. As for the hydraulic part: When my father and I were testing it out the other day looking for leaks, we only found one small leak coming from underneath the pump. It was coming out of this whole that seems to do nothing. There looks to be a small hex head or allan head nut in there. We are just gonna put some epoxy in there and hope that holds the leak. If not, we'll have to buy the new kit. Just trying to avoid the $500 spend. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

any more advice, please feel free.....thanks.
