What to use when lubing the bendix?

Morning fellas,

I recently had trouble with my starter and it turned out that the bendix was stuck to the shaft of the starter; Ive since freed it up and cleaned the shaft. My question is what to use to lube it up so this does not happen again. Currently I have WD40 on it so that i could test it, but there must be a more substantial ingredient to use. Thanks so much for your help.

brandon

You are correct in that WD-40 IS NOT a lubricate. It is fine to use for the purpose you did, to free up the gear/shaft.
The old time lube is 'Lubriplate', a white colored grease. There are a number of other synthetic lubes out there as well, some impervious to salt water.
I like SuperLube myself, made by Synco Chemical of Bohemia New York. It is a synthetic grease.
Whatever you choose, be sure it is on the light side, rather than something as thick as wheel bearing grease........piniongear
