I have a 1968, 23' Fiberform, with twin Mercruiser/four cylinder Chevvy II engines.
They've both been Salt Water Cooled all thier lives.
Now one is rotted out, and the other cant be far behind.
I'm haveing trouble finding a couple of those little engines that I can afford.
I want to stick with these little Four's because they are quiet and dont use much fuel.

I'm wondering what the Manufacturers are using these days for the little Four cylinder engines?

When a boat is sold new, what engines are they using?
When we have to re-power, what do we use?

Who knows of of one of those engines setting around? :)

Thudpucker,

The engine being used to day is a 3.0 liter.

Still made by GM. As a matter of fact, it is nearly the same.

It now produces about 145 hp. at the crankshaft.

I know the 3.0 will swap with a 2.5, however I'm not certain what those were in '68'.

Some other more experienced I/O folks will be along shortly.

Of course you should know the manafolds and risers and a few other things are different if you have the 153cid. They changed sizes of engines around that time frame. Serial numbers and model numbers might help? I would totally repower since you have been in saltwater all these years!!! Is the boat worth a total repower? Should be a bunch of money, and are the drives in good shape? If you have to do it ALL it might be around 15,000.
