What to look for in used motor?

Since it seems that most of you are extremely knowledgable about boats and motors, what should I look for as potential problems with a used motor for a boat I am considering buying??

I noticed when I took off the water pump hose and poured anti-freeze in that the water coming out was dirty, and I would see some rust. Is think normal, I don't believe the boat has been run in quite some time. Maybe 6-12 months.

Also should the prop make a sloppy sound when ran at med-high throttle? I have not had it in the water yet, but I DID do a compression check on the outdrive.

Amy suggestions - I know Jeeps, not boats.

What model motor/outdrive is this? And please describe the 'sloppy' sound you heard further. Was the prop in a barrel, or hooked to flushing ears?

when i purchase or inspect a moter i look at the gearlube to see if it is clean, check the prop out, if its an io and you are in an area that it gets cold, which i asume you are since you were putting antifreeze in the moter. i like to check for cracks externally on the block and exhaust manifolds, check the oil. and most of all her how it runs, shifts, etc.

Prop was hooked to flushing ears. It is a 4.3L mercruiser with an Alpha I outdrive.
