What to look for in a used PWC?

I am looking to buy a used PWC over the winter. What should I be looking for to be sure that I am not getting ripped off. Should I always do an in-water test before buying? Even though I will be using it in salt water I was thinking of doing my search for a machine used primarily in fresh water. Thanks in advance for the tips.

Your question has been asked many times, it would be difficult at best to answer it in a general way,, find a few skies that you are interested in and then perhaps ask a few questions about those individual skies, keep in mind the old saying, LET THE BUYER BEWARE!!! remember, One man's trash is another mans treasure. Good luck..

First determine the usage for the machine...
are you going to use in fresh water or salt water?
are you going to be riding solo or with passenger(s)?
are you going to be crusing, speeding around at WOT, etc.?
do you want a stand-up or sit down model?
pull a tuber or wake boarder?

Most of these will determine the hull design and features you'll need or want.

I am partial to SeaDoo, not because of reliability or fashion...just some good solid reasons. Based on my personal criteria and use, the GTX, its size, hull design, stability and power fits my needs perfectly. Also, the dealer is only two miles away, across the street from the lake (for water tests) and is honest and fair.

All jet skis are high maintenance, the gtx hull from 96 on is in my opinion one of the best for everything you can possibly want from a ski.I use one to demo my steering, Also a good 2 seater is a sp sea doo, I have one of those on my site as well, I too am a sea doo person, most are easy to work on and easy to get parts . And because they are very popular there are a lot of used skies available at reasonable prices. I have owned other makes and go back to sea doo. I do have one that I stay away from and thats a 951 engine,no matter what ski hull its in, but thats just me, they run strong and break hard, usually blowing the cases to pieces.
