My 1984 140 Rebuit Johnson Locked on me this past Friday. I've got it on a 1988 18.5 Shadow Bass boat. I'm looking for a replacement engine for my boat. I've find a 1990 110HP Johnson for $1000.00. My questions is would this engine be to small for this boat? (I'm not one for speed just getting to where I want to fish). What is a good compresson check to look for on this engine? Thanks and God bless for any helps or suggestions.

Re: What to do?

i have a 90hp on an 18" Aluminum center console, runs out a 45 mph. 110hp should push it nicely, compression over 100 psi minimum, with a variance of only 10% between cylinders.

Re: What to do?

You say it "locked". Does that mean it seized? If so, did the powerhead seize or did the lower unit grenade?

Almost the same engine. Am thinking that the 140 may have been a crank rated engine. The 110 is propshaft rated. You may not see much difference between the two as a result.

Yes, I think it has seized. I can't turn the fly wheel with my hands or the starter:eek: . I haven't had it checked by a tec:confused: , yet.
Thanks to all and may God bless.

pull the plugs, and try to turn it. also try turning the prop in all gears, that way you have and idea whether it the power head or the lower unit. if it's blown, part it out on Ebay and recup. part of the replacement cost.
