Don't use any cleaners on plastic, fibre, cork, rubber or neoprene parts. All carb cleaning areosol liquids will work on the metal components. Most are just a lacquer thinner......
Gumout comes in two types; Alcohol or chlorinated flurocarbon with other solvents added. The second is the most potent...and dangerous and really cleans the gunk out by simply jus' spraying the part. The second also burns your eyes and skin like crazy too. Another alternative is to simply take the carb apart and soak in lacquer thinner and clean with a stiff nylon brush.
The May issue of Bass and Walleye Boats magazine has a good story on how to clean carbs. They say that carbon cleaners (Engine Tuner, etc.) work well on hardened carb deposits.
Call me old fashion but I completely take everything apart and let only the METAL soak in commercial carb cleaner. I bought it in a gallon can from NAPA and it works great. It will DESTROY plastic.

I use a large coffee can (the old 3lb size) and soak the parts overnight.

Bob
I use a GUNK product in gallon can, about 20.00. I
soak for no more then 1.5 hours for metal carbs, and about 30 minutes for plastic carb. Have had no problen with plastic carb parts melting. Ok on the OMC float for 15 minutes. USE THIS INFORMATION AT YOUR OWN RISK.
