what to check on used OMC stern drive

I found a complete stern drive from the motor back, my question is what to check for I don't want to throw money away by buying something that is no good.

I know to check to make sure everything turns. What else should I check need to know ASAP....

Water in the gear lube,metal shavings on the drain plug magnet.
Cobra drive?

1985 3.8L 800 Stringer, my upper gearcase locked up. I bought this boat and replaced all the interior ran good a couple times then locked upped. I have torn down to the upper gear case and it will not turn.

Put that money into a new boat with a merc or volvo drive. Just my 2 cents

I have a customer looking for a 800 Stringer drive.He about passed out when i told him the price for a working used unit.
He is going to part the boat out instead.
