Re: what to buy

I think the toahtsu is a much better bang for the buck, and are also well thought of by out of the way commercial guys who have no access to factory authorized mechanics and need reliability.

Re: what to buy

Are we talking 2 stroke Tohatsu vs Honda or 4 stroke Tohatsu vs Honda and (2 stroke or 4 stroke) Johnny??

I agree with SeaJayacas about the reputation of Tohatsu engines. In many places in the world they are the top seller, particularly to professional watermen. I doubt that price is the main consideration there.

Re: what to buy

I dunno...I keep hearing the four stroke Tohatsu 15 and 18 are a real shakers compared to the ultra smooth Honda 15. I only have experience with the Honda though and it's everything it's supposed to be: reliable, quiet, economical and super smooth.

Mike are yours "shakers" at trolling speed? (Looks like the Tohatsus are 15 lbs more too.)

Re: what to buy

The Nissan/Tohatsu 15 hp's do not shake any more or any less than any other 4-stk with similar CID. The weight of the 15 might be an issue as it is on the heavy side....but it's a de-tuned 18 hp. While the Honda is a well designed engine it is no more reliable, quiet, economical or smooth than a Suzuki, Yamaha, Mercury or Nissan/Tohatsu.

my opinion, i had a small boat 8 years ago with a nissan, sold it to a good friend, he had it for a few years, sold it to his friend, still running excellent with no problems.

Re: what to buy

I have an 04 Honda 50f/s. I love it and Hondamarine. I had a dealer related problem ---charged $165 for a 20 hr tune up I did not need (dlr said I needed it to maintain my warranty) Honda reimbursed me as soon as I brought it to their attention.

The engine runs flawlessly unless you consider not being able to hear it when trolling as a flaw.
