What the manual doesn't say.

I have never owned a boat or outboard before so I am asking very basic questions. I have a 6hp Nissan 4 stroke outboard. The manual specifies in detail what motor oil to use, and what LU oil to use. What it doesn't mention at all is what kind of grease to use in the zerks on the shaft above the lower unit (upper unit?). I have a grease gun with automotive grease that I have used on my cars for years, but I don't know if that grease is appropriate for the outboard. If it needs a special kind of grease, I can buy another grease gun just for the outboard. Any recommendations guys?

Thanks,
Bobbo

I just use the Walmart Marine Grease($3/tube)for the boat, motor, trailer, cars, just about everything...no problem. Good Luck!

It would be best to use a marine grease since it will be in contact with water. They sell it at places like WalMart. The grease I buy comes 3 or 4 to a pack in six inch long tubes about an inch in diameter. A small grease gun fits this. With all that said, I am sure you could use automotive grease. But the grease is cheap as is the 4 stroke oil and lower unit oil. So don't skimp on the cheap stuff that will keep you motor running great over the years.
