The tach I had broke when I tried to pull it out of the old dash, and I want to replace it. Is there any specific kind of tach I need?

Yes, you need a 20 pole tach. They are getting difficult to find. If you can't find a 20 pole, a tiny tach will also work. Search threads about tiny tachs.

note that the tiny tach equivalent with the two buttons S1 and S2 is not water proof ....The front will curl up if left in the sun and the battery is prone to come disconnected ( 10% of production) They do have the advantage of suiting 1 stroke 2 stroke or 4 stroke motors ...... sold thousands...

So this tiny tach will take the signal off the purple tach wire? I'm assuming that'll be the signal, and then the other side will be grounded. Thanks for the info, gents!

From what I have read in other posts, the tiny tach takes an inductive signal from a wire looped or wound around one of the spark plug wires, usually the top one.

wind 4-5 turns around a plug lead ...as you should not route the cable by any of the other plug leads it better to choose the bottom plug and route it away from any harness ...usually no eath /ground is required....if its not adjustable its 2 stoke ..ie fires each time one of the pistons reaches TDC
