What STUFF do I NEED?

I have just ordered a 12' Porta-Bote and am awaiting delivery on Monday. I know I need life preservers for both of us, but am clueless as to what else I need. I have just received a 6HP Nissan 4 stroke outboard with a 12L separate fuel tank to mount on it if that influences the answer. Some things I have thought about but don't know if I really need include fire extinguisher, anchor, throwable flotation device, compressed air horn, green/red lights of any kind. We don't fish, we will just be putt-putting around the lake/river.

I want to be safe but don't want to carry the kitchen sink.

Thanks, Bobbo

An oar comes in handy if the engine quits. A plastic coffee can makes a good bail tool if it takes water (and it can happen quicker than you think) and a first aid kit. Everything on your list should be fine too. Depending on where you launch, you might need a push pole to get you free from the shore (you might be able to use the oar). Oh yea: take a least a few bottles of water. Dehydration happens quickly.

I saw a Porta Boat at the Tampa boat show. Those things are cool, and they do hold up well.

Things i carry. Oar, whistle, air horn, Orange distress flag, Fire extinguisher, Throw cushion, Life jacket for everyone on boat, (inflatable vest doesn't count unless its being warn), Basic tools, Extra plug, 100 ft of rope for towing, anchor, and i always take my cell phone. As long as you stay in fresh water i think this list will keep you legal in all states. Salt water requirements are a little different.

Check with your state regulators. They publish requirements. I think I'd prefer a beavertail paddle to an oar. I have found them to be be much more handy than an oar.

The boat actually came with oars and oarlocks. Thanks for the quick answers. We are going to try to get it on a local lake for an hour or two on Saturday.

Definitely get a three-tone whistle as a backup to your air horn, which can leak or otherwise run out of air.

And I'd recommend a small, folding canoe type anchor. No sharp edges and VERY compact. Heck, ya just might find a spot where you want to stay for awhile and just enjoy the scenery without paddling or running a motor.

Have fun and share pix with us!
