I have a 1973 Jolly Roger 17 feet long with a 233 merc with a 888 outdrive. I took it out last year on a flat glass lake and got to approx 60 mph. I dont have a gps but i could pull away from the jetskiiers pretty easily. What I would like to know is am I just crazy or does this sound right?

Sounds reasonable. You can get another boat to pace you to help verify speed also.

If you're pulling away from Jet Ski's they must not be interested in trying to race!!

Pitot speedometers are can be very inaccurate.

If you want to know how fast you're going, you'll need to borrow someones GPS.

Another way to get ball park numbers for speed is to use a prop-slip calculator (use 15% slip) but you'll need to know your prop pitch, drive ratio, and engine rpm accurately.

If you happen to have two fixed points and know the distance between the two you can always figure it out that way.

At 60mph you will do one mile of distance every 60 seconds, or 1/4mile in 15sec etc. This would get you in the ball park of how fast. Infact this is how the state highway patrol clocks speeders from the air. Ever notice a set of large white lines on the side of the freeway with no ryme or reason? Those are timing marks.

You can look up a chart online that will give you a breakdown of times/speeds, or use a tachymeter on a watch, like I said you'll need know specific distances tho.

According to my rough calculations, if you had a 23" pitch prop, and a 1.5 gear ratio in the 888 drive, and were taching 4500rpm WOT, with 15% slip, I get 56mph
