What size socket do I need for this?

All my sockets are either too small or too big for the nut on my Bravo II drive, so I'll have to pick one up in town tomorrow. Anybody know offhand what size I need?

That sure don't look like a BII but if you say so. 1 7/16"

Thanks for the information. If it doesn't look like a B2 to you, what does it look like?
It definitely isn't B3!

This 1-7/16" nyloc nut is designed for and fits Mercruiser Bravo II sterndrives.

I bet I could get that off with vice grips without marring it, cheesy way to do things but

I thought of that, but immediately wondered - "do you measure from flat to flat or peak to peak?" and "my digital caliper measures SAE and metric, which should I use?"
Then I thought - I'll just ask the guys on iBoats, that'll save me time and give 'me a chance to:
1. Tell me what I want to know
2. Tell me why Alpha drives are better than Bravo drives
3. Tell me I should never remove the prop in the first place
4. Caution me against the wrong grease
5. Remind me it's "leftie loosie rightie tightie
Etc. ;)

CSN - vise grips are for after you round the nut off, not before. Everybody knows that!

BC, I'd consider a metric adjustable hammer wrench, but it sounds like an awfully expensive specialty tool. I prefer something that I might be able to use cracking black walnuts too.

This things has sat many seasons in the water, I'm expecting it to come off reluctantly. Socket and breaker bar is the order of the day. Besides, gotta have a socket in order to reinstall with a torque wrench.

1. we did
2. they are lighter, however transmit less power (the whole trade-off thing)
3. you should remove the prop anualy and reinstall with prop shaft grease
4. any grease is better than no grease
5. it is righty tighty lefty loosy

if you cant get a many-mm wrench to fit, flip it over, it then reads in imperial

if it sat on the drive in water for many seasons without being inspected or removed, you may need to cut the prop off and then cut the hub off. makes you cry when its a stainless prop

Glad we can help

Well, no one can say an old dog can't learn! Went to Lowe's, Home Depot, and a couple other places in town looking for the aforementioned socket with no joy. I finally called a friend that owns a marina to confirm the size. His response - "We don't use a socket. We use a large set of channel locks."

I'm guessing they use the calibrated arm when it comes time to put it back on.

I'm still re-bedding all four port lights so the prop is safe until I get those done (next week end perhaps).
