I would like to purchase a small (used) outboard as a backup to a 19 ft, 1800lb, deep vee with a 120 Force. We are typically not more than 2 miles from shore.

What is the smallest (Hp) motor that we can get away with (5.5, 7.5, 9.9)?

(Hmmm, own a 120 Force and considering a backup motor....a coincidence?)

thanks

I have a 17'with an 85HP and have a 3HP.

I made it in from 6 miles out last year in a strong current in the Chesapeake Bay. 2:45 minutes, but it made it.

I would say at least a 3, but maybe a 5 would work a little better. Check E-Bay. I bought a 5HP last year for $100.00 bucks, needs a few minor adjustments, but a $100.00 bucks you can't go wrong, so now I have 2.

If you boat mostly on inland lakes etc...I'd think 5 hp would do fine. But in rivers, bays, or open sea...I wouldn't put anything less than 8 hp on a 19 footer. And even that would make me nervous if pushing against a strong outgoing tide and southerly.

Walt

I'd have to agree with Walter. 5.5-6hp for lakes, and I'd like a 9.9 for bigger water. Covers more distance quicker and will buck a chop and/or headwind better.

I have a 15'6" Welded Aluminum that runs about 1750 lbs loaded. Main engine is a Yamaha 90 with oil injection. For this reason I went with a 4 stroke kicker. Got a Honda 8 hp. Absolutely perfect for this boat. Plenty of power to push it when the tide is running between the islands and runs off the same bow tank fuel as the 90.

If you want to go 2 stroke I would look at a minimum 7.5 to a 9.9. You shouldn't need anything any bigger than that.
