my transom is 19" shaft is i believe 20" i'm looking for a matching kicker. i see motors on cl that say long shaft or short shaft, so i look at new motors they have 15", 20",and 25". so im thinking 15 is short and 25 is long? then what would 20 be:facepalm: is it that 20 is standard so not specified?

15 short, 20 long, 25 extra long. The "transom height", per se', isn't important for the kicker, but rather the height where the kicker is mounted. The boat in your signature would probably do best with a short shaft kicker, whether you mount it on the transom or on a bracket.

yes, the boat in my sig, not sure if i want to mount it or keep it in the bow or locker, then clamp it to the transom in emergency. something small, less than 10hp, nothing too heavy to carry around, what would be the minimum to push my boat at least like the 85hp does at idle, be nice if i could find a matching evinrude

I have a 7.5 Evinrude 1980 kicker, that pushes my 21' Tinny just over 5mph at WOT.:whoo:

that would do fine, thats at least twice the speed of the current of the river where i boat. i might even get by with a 5hp minimum then? do you know how much it weighs?

Re: what size is my shaft

This 1980, 7.5 hp Evinrude is made for saltwater. This outboard engine weighs approximately 56 pounds.

Info on many motors and boats can be found in the FAQ thread.

http://forums.iboats.com/engine-fre...boat-specifications-weight-hp-etc-583161.html

In the upper right there is a link for motors.

A useful thread/link posted by Bob_VT.

I would look on the upper range of HP to get that little extra speed if indeed your fighting the current. I have an old 10hp the weighs about 90lbs on my 14' Tinny.

Boy was that subject title misleading. I thought we now had a X rated area.

Re: what size is my shaft

i didn't know and was trying to figure it out on my own but when i looked at the new motors for sale on iboats site, the sizes are given in inches, when you see them for sale used, the seller describes them as long or short. i now know i have a long shaft at 20" and have been advised that the 15" short shaft would be best for a kicker on my boat. am i right thinking since it wont be at planeing speed that prop will stay beneath the water line?IMG_20121106_170335.jpgIMG_20120614_174121.jpg just for emergency, i could sit in the splashwell to work the tiller, i do most of my boating upriver from the launch so i would most likely be going with the current. think theres room if the big motor were flopped to one side. so long as its less than 100 pounds wont hurt my back to carry it around, something pull start that will run on its own. if i go omc, they can share a fuel line, or would it run on different mix? oh and i included some pix:D the one pic you can see the waterline stain

You have plenty of room for a kicker mounted right on the transom. No sense in storing it. When not in use, tilt it up. If your current motor is a pre-mix model, the same hose will be OK. If its oil injected your tank won't have oil in it so you need a new tank. Almost impossible to find a kicker the same color scheme, so just repaint it yourself. I've done that several times before.

As an aside, you have a dangerous rig there. With an all roller trailer, the over-the-gunnel tie down is inappropriate. Plus, tieing it to the motor is a poor idea. You need a stout pair of transom tiedowns, plus a transom saver for the motor. Your motor likely has a trailering bracket already built in anyway. ust use that.

Please don't take my comments badly. I would just hate to find myself on the interstate behind you.

Re: what size is my shaft

for the most part the rig is the work of the PO, so you wont hurt my feelings, i'm new to this, had to be told to cross my chains:facepalm: the transom was rotted when i got it. i think he was using the strap to keep it on if he hit a bump, i just use it to keep some of the weight off the trailering bracket and so it doesnt flop to the side going dow the road. we will have to disagree on the over the gunnel strap. tho i would like to add transom tie downs to better secure it, i will probably keep what i have in addition. what worries me is the brackets that hold the beams for the rollers to the frame, have been turned upside down i guess so the boat would ride 2" lower on the trailer? sometimes i strap the bow down too, in case the new bow eye breaks:facepalm: had a wheel fly off going down the road, bounced way in the air, now i check lug bolts every trip:rolleyes: so thanks for the input i learn from it;)

You could use your long shaft motor with a kicker bracket. As long as the motor is 70's or later it should use the same mix 50/1. Unless you have a VRO. Then you need a separate tank like mentioned above

The O-T-T strap won't keep the boat on the trailer in an accident. That's why a simple (and cheap) transom strap is needed. The reason the transom was shot was in part due to driving with the motor up. (ask me how I know.,....LOL)

The last motor of that vintage that I had was equipped with a trailer bracket. When in full tilt look in the middle of the transom bracket and see if there is a small lever that tilts down.

Re: what size is my shaft

yes i plan to do the transom straps but first i need to flip the brakets on the frame and move the winch and post to see if i can get the height so the keel doesn't hit the axle and the paint can stay on the fenders and still won't get the clearance to trailer with the motor down, i would lose my skeg

Re: what size is my shaft

I have a roller trailer and the motor is always up when trailering, I use the tilt lock like JimS stated above.

I'm confused by your flipping the brackets statement. The cross supports move up and down depending.

Moving the rollers inbound should prevent the keel from hitting the axle or the cross supports.

Your boat should move forward a little, IMO. Get the rear rollers right at the edge of the transom.

EZ Loader 1.jpg I installed this on my old roller to prevent the hull from scraping the fender. Also did a great job aligning the boat on the trailer.

I believe your problem is that you have a semi-V hull on a trailer designed for a deep-V. Normally, moving the roller brackets inward would raise the hull on the trailer. In your case, it is what it is. Flipping the brackets could cause other issues, but without more pics we can't diagnose it further.

I wasn't suggesting you run with the motor down. I was suggesting you use the motor's built in trailering bracket. With that activated there is no problem with road clearance. Worst case is to have to buy a cheap transom saver (trailer bracket). The point I was trying to make is that what you are doing now is not only dangerous, but harmfull to the back of the boat as well.

Re: what size is my shaft

i will take pics of the brackets it is visably obvious some one flipped them over, there is a block that is supposed to rest on top of the frame, that is instead under so the weight is hanging from the bolts , some PO work i need to fix:facepalm:
